Kathryn Poon's on set playlist

Kathryn Poon is an on-set costumer, as well as being an old friend of ours. Kat has worked on some well known tv shows and movies (we are very jealous) and we wanted to know what her faveourite songs are that feature in some of the tv shows and movies she has worked on.

1. “Breathe” by Celeste (Rocks)

This film was due to come to cinemas in April 2020. However, due to the pandemic it’s release has been delayed, so unfortunately you won’t be able to see this masterpiece directed by Sarah Gavron just yet, BUT you can listen to this song by Celeste, which features beautifully in the trailer. Rocks is like a love letter to East London, so if you’ve ever been down Ridley Road Market or walked along the canal by Hackney Wick, you too will be charmed by this indie flick. Hopefully it’ll come out soon for us all to see, but for now we have Celeste and her marvelous voice.

2. “Let’s Stick Together” by Bryan Ferry (Quiz)

You’ve all heard of Quiz by now, the ITV drama based on true events, detailing the story of Major Charles Ingram cheating his way to a million pounds on hit-show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. And how apt that a coughing scandal should capture the nation during a time that we’re all stuck inside due to COVID19! The show was scored by the brilliant Murray Gold, and is sprinkled with cheeky, jazzy numbers like this one throughout.

I had the pleasure of looking after Sian Clifford’s wardrobe while working on Quiz; here she is looking adorable as ever with Buffy the cat.

3. “Mr. Sandman” by The Chordettes (Sick of It)

In this episode of Sick of It (season 2, episode 4) Karl realizes that he never laughs yet finds he can’t stop laughing in his sleep. “Mr. Sandman” is the perfect, sunshine-y, life affirming tune to walk us into another chapter of this brilliant dark comedy.

I wish I had something interesting to say about this, but it’s literally just a silly photo of me and my colleague goofing off by the monitors.

4. “The Crown Main Title” by Hans Zimmer (The Crown)

There’s a lot of great music in The Crown, but I had to include the title theme in this list. It’s epic, it’s powerful, it’s goddamn genius- oh and of course it’s by the king of epic scores, Hans Zimmer himself.

Screen still of Claire Foy as Elizabeth in The Crown wedding scene.

I was just an intern on work experience when I worked on The Crown season 1. One of my favourite memories was all of us huddled under this giant roll of fabric, hot-stoning and beading the train to a replica of Queen Elizabeth’s wedding dress (right).

5. “Come Down” by Anderson Paak (Sliced)

The intro to our two central characters, lovable idiots and pizza delivery boys Joshua and Ricky. We pan across this South London estate following Joshua on his unfashionable delivery moped to find all of his belongings thrown on the ground- his mum’s kicked him out again!

6. “Money Right” by Dizzee Rascal ft. Skepta (Sliced)

And because I loved working on Sliced SO MUCH, I chose another song. But to be honest there are so many great tunes in the series you should just go and watch it on UKTV Play.

And here’s just a couple more pictures of Samson, the genius behind Sliced, just because he’s a babe and why the hell not?
